I am passionate about conducting therapy to address relationship issues. My granddad always used to say (in his London cockney accent) ‘Aint love grand’, which is a philosophy I have carried with me throughout my life, and which has inspired me to help couples achieve happiness and fulfillment in their relationships in my work as a psychologist. I truly believe that love can be grand, however it does take a little bit of work to achieve this. I have experience with helping both couples and individuals to improve their communication, resolve conflict, and helping them build a solid relationship skill set. I am happy to support couples with a range of issues, including (but not limited to) anger management issues, porn addiction, sex therapy, and conducting pre-marriage sessions.
I am also experienced in providing one to one evidence based therapeutic interventions with adolescents and adults to address mild to moderate mental health issues including (but not restricted to) anxiety disorders such as OCD, PTSD, and generalized anxiety disorder, depressive disorders, chronic fatigue, anger management, addictions, work life balance, abuse and trauma, sleep issues, issues arising in adolescence, grief and loss, and specific issues such as work place stress and bullying, and general stress. I also have an extended and continuing history of working with forensic patients both in prisons and the community, and I am able to support patients who are involved with the criminal justice system. Additionally I am a registered diagnostician with Autism SA and can conduct assessments of autistic spectrum disorder in adults.
My therapeutic approach fosters an understanding, caring, warm, supportive, and non-judgmental environment for all patients. I provide therapy for individual patients mainly from a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) paradigm, as this is has a stron basis of scientific evidence proving its effectiveness. In addition to CBT I also use other evidence based approaches including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Family Systems Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, tailoring the approach to best suit the needs of each individual patient.
I work collaboratively with my patients, engaging them in a joint process where they are active participants in both deciding what they would like to achieve from their time in therapy, and in implementing the therapeutic strategies. Within a healing and caring environment, I help patients to learn new skills and strategies including communication skills, relationship skills, conflict management, relaxation, mindfulness, sleep strategies, anger management etc. to help my patients achieve better mental health, improved daily functioning, and happier interpersonal relationships. Additionally I help patients to gain a deeper understanding of their own personality and values, and enable patients to use this knowledge to make life decisions and set goals. My aim is to provide patients with skills and knowledge, which they can use for the rest of their lives. I genuinely care about all of my patient’s wellbeing and happiness, and I feel grateful and honored to have the opportunity as a psychologist to walk alongside my patients as they make positive life changes in order to lead a happier and more fulfilling life.
